AGSS: Designers Christopher Owen & Phillip Withers

Our last instalment from the Australian Garden Show Sydney 2014 includes Christopher Owen’s Silver Medal winning TREAD LIGHTLY, and Phillip Withers’ MY ISLAND HOME which won Bronze plus the People’s Choice Award.

TREAD LIGHTLY

Christopher Owen‘s serene garden, constructed by I’ve Got Time included quiet spaces – but with dramatic elements.

Ground covers included bands of grasses and lush ferns; with Acer Japonicum, crepe myrtles and Araucaria cunninghamii leading eyes to the sky.

Walls on two sides were formed with stacked, split timber encased with corten steel. A circular fire bowl, a rectangular, dark reflecting pond, and decomposed granite were chapters in the ‘fire, water, earth’ story.

‘Tread Lightly’ was an alluring space.

MY ISLAND HOME

Philip Wither‘s funky garden, constructed by Semken Landscaping made visitors smile – so no wonder it was The People’s Choice!

“The day was long, so what bliss to arrive home and step outside into My Island Home.  Kicking off my shoes, I can feel the warm texture of timber beneath my feet, and there is a breeze rustling the palms and rich green cycads. The hammock is calling!

But first I’m going to wander and wind down a little, feel the sand between my toes, and enjoy the jewel box of colourful succulents, just like coral in my own lagoon, and the energy of those flashing, leaping fish, My Island Home, buy haven…”

Phillip Withers

We hope you enjoyed the eight show gardens.

For the designers and their teams of suppliers and installers it’s a massive effort to present show gardens – and all we have to do is enjoy them!
